![]() The economic reality of Rap made itself very clear this decade and by the end of 1990, sales exceeded $100 million (Robinson, 1999). The 90s brought an uproar of new and hot Rap music which took the nations by storm. All of which transcended and progressed into the 90s with many more rappers whom have impacted Rap culture and still leaves a mark on society today. More urban angst was exposed as Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” kicked Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” soundtrack off the hook and Professor Griff’s anti-Semitic remarks caused a media fury (Robinson, 1999). Dre turned up on cable with “Yo MTV Raps”, in which sparked new recognition for Rap (Robinson, 1999). Two Harvard undergrads started a flyer called “The Source,” running it out of their dorm room Ed Lover and Dr. The marketing and mass social media attention got heavier and more apparent as society grew more aware of Rap culture. The notorious group N***** With Attitude (N.W.A) came roaring with “Straight Outta Compton,” scaring the hell out of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, that the FBI sent letters to police chiefs nationwide singling out the cut “F*** The Police” as an example of the anti-law-enforcement element in Rap (Robinson, 1999). Rap culture gained more attention in the 80s with controversial groups and subliminal lyrics that gained massive media, political, and societal attention. Rap music became more apparent within society in the early 80s and has since transformed and gained positive and negative connotations surrounding this genre. Hip-Hop and Rap, nearly 40 years old, is a global force that has earned a place in academia and played a notable role in politics and many other societal issues (Peterson, 2018). In the 1970s, a wave of white flight left behind, primarily, an impoverished black community in which artists from this area brought together words and beats to describe the struggles of poverty in black culture (McLeoud, 2017). Rap’s earliest days arose out of the experience of African Americans in the Bronx borough in New York City (McLeoud, 2017). Rap music is an embodiment of hip-hop culture that has impacted and addresses issues within society. Rap music addresses important social, political, economic, and ethical topics of generations that has impacted society. Music is a universal language and Rap music is an important aspect of uncovering and discovering new cultures. Rap music has impacted society in many ways that has essentially changed our society and the definition of music. Hip-Hop has stemmed into many branches and the most controversial yet influential is Rap. But there's also the dirty south and so many more things, that as a rap fan you may have heard about or are at least interesting enough for those who did not live back then to experience now.Hip-Hop, in today’s society, is often labeled as controversial and essentially corrupting. You can feel the love through the screen Edit 2: even more seasons and maybe no end in sight? I wouldn't mind, because the quality is there and the interviewer as someone in the game himself, knows what he talks and asks others about! Even if the Biggie and Pac thing has to be condensed it finally gets spoken about to here. In-Depth and a lot of interviews and background information. And while I didn't expect one to come (2 years after the initial season was made), it is as good as one would imagine. So while this may not be definitive and you may not find your favorite artist in this, it is one of the best looks inside and beyond Hip Hop Edit: Just watched the second season. It's more broad in that way, which it has to be, because if covers not just one style. There are quite a few artists who get to say how it was for them and there is a lot of trivia shared. And it's really nice that the whole thing has a time-line and starts from the beginning, going towards the the newer age of hip hop. ![]() It's not just an evolution, but also a revolution at times. Though even that running time cannot cover everything, it does cover really interesting points in the history of how this became a cultural phenomenon. So if you are here for the longer run (it's almost 3 hours long, split into 4 episodes), you are in for a treat. I imagine it still is good, but hopefully some people who mixed those two up, will not confuse others. The movie played at some festivals and has a condensed view. Some have mistaken the movie that was compiled and cut together from this series as the actual series.
